The area of Torre dei Corsari, part of the Municipality of Arbus, overlooks the great dunes of Pistis on the northern side (the one facing the house balcony reaches almost eighty meters in height), while to the south it opens onto a very rugged coastline, with striking views where rocky stretches alternate with golden beaches and the highest dunes in Europe.
The typical Mediterranean vegetation behind the dunes and in the nearby hinterland is still intact and is home to the flora and fauna typical of this environment.
At the tip of Flumentorgiu stands the tower of the same name, dating back to the 16th century, when it served as a watchtower against the threat of Saracen pirates. From there it is possible to admire unique landscapes stretching from the Sinis Peninsula and the Gulf of Oristano to the north, down the entire Costa Verde with Capo Pecora and beyond, as far as the island of San Pietro to the south.
The sea is always clear and clean, also thanks to the beneficial action of currents and rough seas that contribute to the natural renewal of the waters. It is deep and appealing for strong swimmers. The beach, one of the largest on the western coast of Sardinia, is equipped with facilities during the summer season.
The area is ideal for a fully relaxing stay at any time of the year. You will find shops, pizzerias and restaurants; there is also an ATM just outside the Costadoro condominium.
We suggest some of the possible itineraries starting from Torre dei Corsari.
1) Heading south along the road that runs through the Costa Verde, in about twenty minutes you can reach the splendid dunes of Piscinas and continue on to the mining areas rich in structures typical of industrial archaeology (see the mines of Buggerru, which can be visited almost in their entirety). Further inland, the town of Arbus is an important center of ancient Sardinian knifemaking (the typical “arburesa” knife).
2) The Monte Linas area (which reaches almost 1,300 meters in height), between Fluminimaggiore, Gonnosfanadiga and Villacidro, offers the opportunity for excursions in wooded environments rich in vegetation and wildlife (and water, unlike almost any other place in Sardinia). It is not uncommon to come across the Sardinian deer as well.
3) To the north there are lagoons (starting with Marceddì, just six kilometers away) with very fish-rich brackish waters, home to rich colonies of water birds (flamingos, spoonbills, black-winged stilts, etc.).
4) About an hour's drive away lies Oristano and the area of Cabras, where the Sinis Peninsula begins. Absolutely worth visiting is the Phoenician, Punic and Roman settlement of Tharros (a World Heritage site), on the peninsula north of the Gulf of Oristano, a uniquely beautiful setting between the open sea and the inland sea. The museum of Cabras houses the Giants of Monte Prama (the first free-standing sculptures in Europe after the Egyptian ones, recently discovered), dating back to three thousand years before Christ. There are also beautiful beaches such as Is Arutas, with its “rice grain” sand.
5) Inland, beyond Terralba, there are numerous small villages where the pace of life is still that of the farming and pastoral world. About an hour away by car you can reach the Nuraghe of Barumini (declared a UNESCO World Heritage site), which can be visited in full with a guide. Behind it lies the Giara di Gesturi, a plateau about six hundred meters above sea level that offers the possibility of long walks with views stretching over much of Sardinia, and where it is possible to see the typical Sardinian little horses living in the wild.
